In July, War Resisters' International are hosting an international conference in South Africa, along with the Ceasfire Campaign.

Find out more information about the conference here.

Theme groups run throughout the conference, working on a specific facet of the conference's theme. At the end of the conference, time is dedicated to sharing the learning of theme groups.

One theme group will be on the theme Countering the Militarisation of Youth, co-convened by Sahar Vardi (American Friends Service Committee, Jerusalem) and Dola Oluoch (Chemchemi Ya Ukweli-Active, Kenya).

Theme group descriptionWar, and violence in general, cannot happen without people, especially young people, being educated to support it, condone, it, see it as natural, and for some—to join it, perpetrate it. In recent years, the WRI has been leading an effort—the first of its kind—to bring together activists working to counter this militarisation of youth all over the world to share their knowledge, tactics and strategies. This effort included organising an international seminar in 2012, coordinating an international day of action for military-free education and research on 14 June, 2013 and the publication the book “Sowing Seeds: The Militarisation of Youth and How to Counter It"
