Cossack Youth Join In On ‘Breeding For War’

(Source: Cossack Youth Kuban Union)

Russian observers have increasingly touched on Moscow’s renewed efforts to militarize youth and prepare (or “breed”) them for war (PONARS Eurasia, December 20, 2023; see EDM, February 13). Cossack education has become a cornerstone of the Kremlin’s efforts in this regard. Russian youth are being prepared to engage in the second “Great Cossack Circle [meeting]” (see EDM, February 14). The deputy Ataman for the youth of the “All-Russian Cossack Society” (VsKO), Igor Kochubeev, confirmed the “participation of youth in the work of the Second Great Circle of Russian Cossackdom.” The Kremlin continues to use its war against Ukraine to try to unite the Cossack movement under its control.

September 29, 2022 / Harold Meyerson / The American Prospect  - It’s been less than a week since Vladimir Putin announced he was calling up 300,000 fellow Russians to fight his war in Ukraine, but on Monday, just five days after his speech, the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, citing government sources, reported that 261,000 Russian men had fled the country. Today’s New York Times reports that the line of cars at Russia’s border with Georgia stretches 12.5 miles.

Credit where credit is due: Putin has accomplished in less than a week what it took years for Presidents Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon to do—drive young men across the border (in that case, Canadian) rather than fight an immoral and failing war.

Militarism Run Amok: Russians and Americans Get Their Kids Ready for War

Lawrence Wittner - In 1915, a mother's protest against funneling children into war provided the theme of a new American song, "I Didn't Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier." Although the ballad attained great popularity, not everyone liked it. Theodore Roosevelt, a leading militarist of the era, retorted that the proper place for such women was "in a harem―and not in the United States."

If Roosevelt were still around today, a century later, he would be happy to learn that preparing children for war continues unabated.
