Boko Haram and the Children’s Crusade

By Philip Obaji Jr., The Daily Beast

Generations of young Nigerians in the northeast of their country are being shaped by the terrors of the war.

LAGOS — “I was asked to kill my parents on the day I was captured,” said 16-year-old Babagana, a former Boko Haram child slave. "I had no courage, so they killed them in front of me.”

“That is how Boko Haram operates,” he told me when I saw him in March in Borno State. “They first take out your parents so you have no one else to fall back to.”

Europe's biggest arms maker to run UK schools

The British government has chosen Europe’s largest arms manufacturer as its preferred sponsor of an under-performing school in northwestern England, prompting criticism by anti-arms trade activists.

The UK-based BAE Systems, which made £15.4 billion in profits last year, is set to take over Furness Academy in Barrow, Cumbria, in September by setting up a trust to run the school under its submarine-building plant based in the town, SchooWeek journal reported Friday.

This is while Sam Robinson, university coordinator for the Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT), described the decision as “deeply worrying.”

“The idea [BAE] could soon be playing a significant role in running one of our schools is deeply worrying,” added Robinson.

He further said, “It … gives them direct access to potential future employees and often allows them to influence the curriculum to suit their employment needs.”

Stop the draft, go all-volunteer

April marks draft season for young Thai males. As in previous years, this year's military screening did not fail to stir a high degree of public excitement, with superstar Mario Maurer among the celebrities to play the "black card-red card" game, while photos of beautiful transsexuals who turned up for the inspection went viral on social media.

Even though the military draft has ended, criticism over the failure of military conscription to hold true to its purpose of "service to the nation" has not ceased. Rather, it is here to stay, especially under a military-led government that prides itself highly on national reform and "returning happiness to the people".

How Music Shields a Child’s Psyche in a Time of War

By Sandy Tolan

A few Palestinian children protect themselves from trauma and stress by playing the violin and other instruments.

RAMALLAH—The white van, carrying young musicians riding home from a concert in Bethlehem, suddenly came upon a military barrier erected hastily in the road. “halt!” commanded a sign in Arabic and Hebrew. Just beyond, an olive-clad soldier was checking documents.

”Flying checkpoint,” said Rasha Shalalda, 14, a Palestinian flutist, to her sister Alá, 10, and other fellow musicians.  They were students at a Palestinian music school, Al Kamandjati (Arabic for The Violinist).

Yemen crisis: Meet the child soldiers who have forsaken books for Kalashnikovs

By Charlene Rodrigues and Mohammed Al-Qalisi, The Independent

With schools forced to close, children as young as seven have been recruited by the Shia Houthi rebels.

At the entrance of Bab Al-Yemen, Old Sanaa, a waif-like Hassan, dwarfed by his Kalashnikov, stands at a checkpoint. His dark eyes scan vehicles as they pass through.

Like most seven-year-olds in Sanaa, Hassan used to spend his time at school – or playing table football with his friends. That was until three weeks ago.

International Statement: Solidarity with the Egyptian Conscientious Objector Mark Nabil Sanad

We, peace and human rights organizations, declare our support and solidarity with No to Compulsory Military Service Movement and with the Egyptian conscientious objector, Mark Nabil Sanad. We condemn the silence of Egypt’s authorities over conscientious objectors’ suffering. We call on the Egyptian authorities to restore his civil rights and to recognize his right to an exemption from the military service based on his conscientious beliefs.  Mark Nabil had informed the officers at Assiut Conscription Area on the 13th of May, 2014 of his Pacifist beliefs, and his refusal to the military service. He was interrogated by a Military Security Officer that day, then was interrogated again on the 15th of May, 2014, in the main headquarter of the Military Intelligence in Cairo.
